Providing Geological Knowledge by GIS

چکیده
Communication in geology is characterized by very many expressions, used in texts and lectures. Among these, nonverbal terms are much more important than in other sciences. Informations rarely reflect pure facts, rather they are expressions and results of a complex process of knowledge formation. In a geologic map for example, the structure of symbols illustrates the process of knowledge transfer, which is a reflection of knowledge formation, that is building a model by chains of conclusions and hypotheses. Modern communication technologies imply new possibilities and, as a consequence, new standards of knowledge transfer. GIS development still focusses the digitalized analogous map. This is a map which represents the latest result of the complex regional geologic model, summarized and abstracted in polygons. Facts and their variations as well as their alternative interpretations still are discussed in explanatory notes. But, if we reflect knowledge representation in maps and texts, we will have to change our habit of communication. The classic demand, that the "ancient" geologic map is to display observations in such a way that users can find their data easily and understand their significance (BENDER 1981), obtains a new weight. The knowledge behind the polygons, that is hypotheses and inferences, ought not to be regarded self-evident any more. In this context, our project can be seen as pure research. Starting with the theory of geo-science and with how scientists draw their conclusions, we have analyzed problems of geologic knowledge formation and knowledge transfer. Our object of investigation and realization was the geologic map of Nordrhein-Westfalen 1:25.000, sheet 4617 Brilon (STEUERWALD 1992, 1996). Two user groups can be distinguished. The first group is "looking forward", making prognoses mostly deductively, in order to solve real world problems (KÜBLER 2000). The second group is "looking backward" at the modelling process combined with the geologic map. In this article we will adopt the view of a backward looking geologist. We will look at the history of a map, the development of the underlying map model as related to the region under concern and its geologic history: How does such a model work? Which components does it have? What theories are employed or construed by the map author?

متن کاملFrom photo-geology to 3D geological models. An open source approach
Three-dimensional modeling of geological bodies is a useful tool for multiple applications. Such tasks are usually accomplished starting from fieldcollected data, which typically suffer from intrinsic limitations such as accessibility constraints and punctuality of data collected. In this work, we explore the reliability of photo-geological mapping from interpretation of aerial photographs in p...
متن کاملPreparation and Evaluation of Engineering Geological Maps in 3-dimensional Geographic Information Systems Environment
Geological engineers have mostly been involved in geotechnical problems since the beginning of 19 century. Engineering geological maps and field data are needed to solve these problems. The amount of data for these maps is extremely large, so putting all the map elements on the map sheet causes difficulties while solving problems. The magic words, Geographic Information System (GIS) is a tool f...
متن کاملDevelopment of a web-based Geographic Information System for the management of borehole and geological data
The main objective of this study is to develop a prototype model of Web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) application for efficient management of borehole and geological data. More than 10,000 boreholes and other geological data were archived into the database and Web-based GIS system was implemented for a local urban area of Seoul in Korea. A standard form of borehole data was suggeste...

The application of GIS to the forecast and evaluation in the regional landslide can provide scientific basis for the regional geological environment management and the geological disaster assessment, can integrate the scattered data to share each other, and can improve data value. Its powerful interface function library provides a good tool for the professional GIS design and development. This ...
متن کاملA 3d geoscience information system framework
Two-dimensional geographical information systems are extensively used in the geosciences to create and analyse maps. However, these systems are unable to represent the Earth’s subsurface in three spatial dimensions. The objective of this thesis is to overcome this deficiency, to provide a general framework for a 3d geoscience information system (GIS), and to contribute to the public discussion ...
